Happy valentines FEU-FERN…
Who is FEU-fern (read if-eh-you- fern?)
Asking “who is FEU-fern?” is not that an easy .We’re just like so puzzled who should answer our questions that well, or accurately i guess. But hey, we have contemplated that more than the school administration or brochures, the students themselves are the most accurate sounding board of the school. You might be surprised how knowledgeable or far from the known statistics the students know sometimes about. But one thing i prove, their answers have deeper meanings than the objective data you can gather.
How accurate could one blog or research about a certain school? Who knows… the school “itself” might not really be a good respondent anyway, so we resort to ask the more interesting respondents (or say the most reliable?), the students.
What’s the school population (college only)?
Here are the answers: 900+, 1000+, 1200, 1500, 2000, don’t have any idea and many guesses.
See, many don’t read statistics and brochures. But i guess, students are not just really simply exposed to their basic school info’s. Others even say they don’t read the history or general information about the school before entering in. But let’s say the population is relatively small compare the school square area (some even joke about it).
Some don’t know their departments population ( i.e IT, CS). Great, but isn’t this just a simple info to know as a student? Just a thought.
Is the tuition cheap or expensive (for you)? How much was it…(all are in Php-Peso)
Many say relatively cheaper than other schools, others interrupted it’s expensive if you don’t have money for it (tama nga naman haha, nice one!).
Many students don’t know when asked about the details about per unit cost… some say, 300, 500, 600+. But then, others give some accurate answers like… 682, 687. Others likewise give their opinions about NSTP fee and others, saying that it isn’t worth the money to pay that much. NSTP is 900php and the teacher just meet them once that week (wow, what a day?).
Institutions should really give us the quality of our money, is that it? Well, its trimester, so times 3 your semester fee of about 20,000 (sounds expensive to me though)
So hows the faculty, any comments?
Yeah they are fine. Some other don’t want to say anything. I got interested when i hear someone saying that some students have more knowledge or interest than their teacher (haha lagot si sir!).
Teachers somehow represent the school to the students (just my own brain thought). Should we improve on the quality of the faculty? I don’t ask that question anyway to students…
Comment about the security guards?
Hahaha, great security we want indeed. Some complains, others say it’s just reasonable but there are those cry “bias”. Well for me, i have lots of encounters with guards and the like, somehow let’s just brief how the guards treat guest in any sense. Should we rest how our schooled be viewed from outside simply because our people don’t represent us so well to outsiders.
I hope schools should develop community for students by allowing access… may it be school ground, library or hallways. The Guards has been nice to us that day… do a car made the difference? Some might answer, YES.
Student behaviors or anything about them…any concerns?
Marami, i think they need a school paper and student government to air those, but unfortunately they have none.
Rate the school in scale of 1 to 10 (1 the highest 10 the lowest)…
The common answer are 4,5,6 meaning just average! I think thats what you get when you don’t give students that much freedom to say what’s in their heart.
Hey, its hearts month, lets give our students the freedom and the love that they need and deserve.
Happy valentines FEU-fern.

Intramuros paper and interviews…
|
I have a fun time when I visited the Intramuros (the walled city) last week. I went there commuting and walking around, it was just like enjoying and all fun. I have never expected that it was that huge, around 64 hectares in area and with walls around 4 kilometers long. Yes, I have walk on the walls like a historian. I have also take the chance to interview some passers by and students that came across my way. I asked them same questions Mr Ambeth Ocampo gave us as guide questions. Nice to hear their opinions and stories. I can’t hardly disagree or agree with them, I just like it when they’re saying their personal views to some questions. Some students answers with disinterest in their eyes, some answers with great enthusiasm. I just thank them all and promised them to write their names as credits in my blog or SNS (social networking sites). Getting their e-mails would be the most logical thing to do, to send them updates. |
What do these places tell us about life in the Spanish period?
Intramuros tells us a lot about the Spanish period in our history. It gives a “live” commentary and a present documentary of what’s it like to be at that time (when all the walls are still there?). Students I have interviewed greatly agree about the Spanish influence that can be seen in those buildings, street names and church buildings. Of course I know that many of those structures are just restored by the Intarmuros Administration recently, but then I could have almost believe that these are still the buildings of the past. I stop believing such notion when I came across to interview the security guard in Casa Manila (he is dressed like a guardia cibil). The security guards told me that many buildings are just replica and presently built.
Many buildings can tell us that Spanish live in the Philippines at those times as ELITES, the buildings are elegant. Also some prison cells tells us their cruelty. Some would also say church cathedrals can represent how they greatly influence how we think.
Would you like to live in those times?
Many people that I did interview don’t want to live at “those times”. They say its too traditional, “choking”, no freedom, with constant fear of war and etc. I have heard a lot of opinions. But if you ask me, oh well I might say I like to live then just to “feel” the the history but can’t imaging really living “in there in my life’s duration”. Some tourism and HRM students say “yeah we would like to relived those times, you know that the tourist and tourism industry would be greatly benefited”. Oh well, they have a point. Many tourist now are coming to Intramuros just to feel the ambiance of the past but don’t want to imagine really living in there on “their whole life”.Some of those that I have interviewed enumerated the cruelty of the Spanish time.
Was life more difficult or easier?
All I can say is how would we know. But many says, its difficult. Those who says “its easier”, have a disclaimer. Its easier if you are Spanish. He has a great point. All I can say is that I want, also to live at those time of history if “i am Spanish”. See how many people look negatively on our colonial period with Spain. Have Spain been a good master? Only the students from Lyceum, Mapau and PLM can answer that, MAYBE or maybe not.
Do these traces of those times say something negative (or justify the negative things we are taught by the Spanish )about the Spanish rule for 3 centuries in the Philippines?
This is the killer question. Many really say, “OH YEAH, RIZAL HAS BEEN IMPROSONED AND SHOT HERE”. I can’t hardly deny or disagree. But well, there are those who also say, the Spanish also have some positive points, they thought us something.
The guys form Mapua (MIT) even have a lively discussion with me about Spain bringing us “culture” and the other guy answers back that they on the contrary have destroyed our culture.
I have talked to people when I strolled the place; students, photographer, “guardia cibil” security guards, (tourism, HRM, IT, engineering, accountancy) students (St Paul-Manila, Lyceum, MIT, PLM). All their insights are so interesting, I felt like I want to research more and do some really serious research on this, not just because it’s required in a history or Rizal class but because it intrigues me or say spoke something significant.
P.s. Some people have heard about Mr. Ambeth Ocampo or say he’s “familiar”, when I asked them if they know the man. All I can say he’s my teacher in this course, haha. And he’s very interesting. I’m serious, when I actually walk on those streets and those walls and those buildings. Especially knowing that our students could take interest in the past or such a small region we called Intramuros (the city within the city, the Maynila as we know it before) is such a nice thing.

Kind of film viewer are you?
Michael Caldo
up_iegeek@yahoo.com
www.miccaldo.tk
When I view a film or a movie, I take note or reconsider the producers, directors or actors of the film. I reconsider the producer since it speaks a lot of the production and the techniques applied in the film, the producers also has to improve the quality of the film since their names are attached into it. Directors and actors are also considered since they are the primary players that portray how the film will look like to the viewer. Actors and directors gets the substance or the message across to the public viewer.
Also before I’m to watch a film, I somewhat researched about the story and the purpose why the film was made. I also get the opinions or comments of my trusted friends and mentors about what they can about the story and theme of the film.
The impact and uniqueness of the film is also a factor for my film viewing. I might do something else rather than view a film that is average or mediocre. There are some films that I particularly like because of the richness of the insights that they convey… e.g. Narnia, The Lord of the rings, Starwars, HarryPotter and many others. I also like films with social relevance or I might coined as realistic-films. I am much more interested with films that says something about societies’ problems and offering a solution.
Values and characters that shown by the film is also factors of me liking a film or not… core values such as love, honor, integrity, creativity, innovation and relevance. I don’t watch pornographic films now since I highly honored and valued the purity and morality of women. I don’t say I haven’t watched pornographic films before, I am saying that I have stopped watching since I became a Christian– when my life was truly transformed by the Lord from deep within.
Sometimes some people say “i want to transform the nation”, well in fact they couldn’t believe for a personal transformation for themselves. I believe that there will be a new moral and sexual revolution that will happen to the youth when we radically take a stand on real purity.
I could hardly believe how we could stand for freedom of violence and abuse for women if we ourselves couldn’t respect their dignity, purity and seeing their real value. If we are to see women with lustful eyes and thoughts, I think we have a great problem…that’s why its my conviction not to watch films that makes women an object of lust, abuse and sexual violence.

U-belt sociology
U-belt sociology
mic caldo/ up_iegeek@yahoo.com
www.miccaldo.tk
The personal troubles in U-belt are mind boggling. It’s sad to think that many of the students are exposed to such troubles/issues. To name a few, these troubles were violence, crime, drugs, prostitution, dangerous vices and unconducive learning environment.
The social location and living conditions is not good for students. The Ubelt area is overpopulated and not well manage (environmentally and politically). Some would say that it could be a good learning experience for students in real life. But hey, the living conditions in the area is exposing the students for bad influences (as we can see in the shown documentary).
The schools in the area should be held accountable and responsible for creating an environment of safely and protection for their students. But as we think about it, many of the schools in there is simply treating their students as costumers and making education as a great business.
Oh yes, there are students that survived and some get to be successful, but how many are they compare to those whose lives are destroyed and being exposed to many dangers daily.
The personal troubles of students in Ubelt is now a public issue because of the high concentration of schools in the area and the high number of population of students. The overpopulated area cause traffic of vehicles and environmental pollutions in the area. And it seems to me that the local government is not taking measures to solve the problems. I believe that we can still have sustainable solutions for the problems of Ubelt. I believe that the students (in Ubelt) themselves could make a great difference.
As some would rather prefer to blame the school, the local government or even the environment, I still believe that the students in themselves could take the responsibility to be the solutions to their own problems. There are still those who rise up in the situation and refuse to believe that the scenario is hopeless and unchangeable. There are those who are to refuse the illegal/immoral activity and be a catalyst for change.
To have a sustainable solution for the adversities (economic or whatever that is) that we are facing, change must start from within and from an individual one at a time. I believe that “if I change, everything changes” (Rich Witmer).
Other people would not take action when their personal troubles hasn’t become a social issue. But then, I do believe that personal troubles are the battle wherein we are to engage the strongest. I have this thought that winning our personal battle is the key to societal/public issues.
Maybe some others would say that I can’t relate to the problems that students have in Ubelt, that I don’t have personal experience how its like to live in there. But hey, I’m also a student and I’ve been to Ubelt once in awhile. Also, some of my friends are studying in Ubelt.
We in UP might think that Ubelt’s problems are not ours and we are not supposed to care because we have such a campus blessed with many tress and without traffic. But then think about it, Ubelt gives us somehow a picture of our educational system and the graduates that we are producing. We have to care and be a solution. For me, the significance of sociological imagination is to think that we can be the solution, that we can make a difference.

i’m not bored
I’m not bored.
Giving your life away… we are bored because i believe the main reason is we just live for ourselves. Life is getting excited and practical lately. my goal is to invest my life away. Investing to harvest the greatest leaders you can raise up. just imagine leading 12 leaders who leads their own twelve.
what does it take to have the greatest leaders of our time, much more twelve of them?
what does it take to win one person and take him into a process of leadership?
what kind of heart could you have to be entrusted to have the 12 greatest leaders of this present generation?
it takes a leader to lead a leader. it takes the greatest leader to raise up the greatest leaders.

purity
Purity is what we were made up of and what we were made for. Like a child, believing on everything without limitations, That’s exactly the picture of how we should operate in our lives. The question “why a child operates like that?” Let me suggest a single-word answer– purity.
In silence and rest we are beginning to greatly understand what purity is all about.
I’ve been thinking, purity must not be a pursuit just rooted in our human nature, it must be a pursuit rooted in our relationship with the Lord. Purity will be one of the significant pillars that our foundations should be built upon.
Purity might also be same with, holiness. exactly. i believe and declare that the greatest anointing/gift that we (i) should carry is this one— purity, power, childlikeness.
Orphans, widows, children and rejected women longs for the purity and love that should overflow from us, the purity and love that we authentically carry.
I believe for a day that our purity would attract all those friends that have seen the impurity of our past. People might sneer on our message, but when the messenger is with purity they would truly like it.
You want to be truly happy, be holy. Holiness leads to authentic happiness.
So here it is : the message is purity, the messenger is pure. Let us declare purity in our lives, family, university (UP), city and nation.
The University of the Philippines longs too see a people that walks the message in equal proportion with its messenger.
I believe that UP Students of Destiny will lead a revival of purity and power. UP has too long been known for rebellion, violence and humanistic thoughts and impurity… but all of that is changing. It is changing. UP will be known of as a catalyst of true spiritual and love revolution, that will spread in our nation and the all the nations.
Purity is the Key.
