The personal troubles in U-belt are mind boggling. It’s sad to think that many of the students are exposed to such troubles/issues. To name a few, these troubles were violence, crime, drugs, prostitution, dangerous vices and unconducive learning environment.
The social location and living conditions is not good for students. The Ubelt area is overpopulated and not well manage (environmentally and politically). Some would say that it could be a good learning experience for students in real life. But hey, the living conditions in the area is exposing the students for bad influences (as we can see in the shown documentary).
The schools in the area should be held accountable and responsible for creating an environment of safely and protection for their students. But as we think about it, many of the schools in there is simply treating their students as costumers and making education as a great business.
Oh yes, there are students that survived and some get to be successful, but how many are they compare to those whose lives are destroyed and being exposed to many dangers daily.
The personal troubles of students in Ubelt is now a public issue because of the high concentration of schools in the area and the high number of population of students. The overpopulated area cause traffic of vehicles and environmental pollutions in the area. And it seems to me that the local government is not taking measures to solve the problems. I believe that we can still have sustainable solutions for the problems of Ubelt. I believe that the students (in Ubelt) themselves could make a great difference.
As some would rather prefer to blame the school, the local government or even the environment, I still believe that the students in themselves could take the responsibility to be the solutions to their own problems. There are still those who rise up in the situation and refuse to believe that the scenario is hopeless and unchangeable. There are those who are to refuse the illegal/immoral activity and be a catalyst for change.
To have a sustainable solution for the adversities (economic or whatever that is) that we are facing, change must start from within and from an individual one at a time. I believe that “if I change, everything changes” (Rich Witmer).
Other people would not take action when their personal troubles hasn’t become a social issue. But then, I do believe that personal troubles are the battle wherein we are to engage the strongest. I have this thought that winning our personal battle is the key to societal/public issues.
Maybe some others would say that I can’t relate to the problems that students have in Ubelt, that I don’t have personal experience how its like to live in there. But hey, I’m also a student and I’ve been to Ubelt once in awhile. Also, some of my friends are studying in Ubelt.
We in UP might think that Ubelt’s problems are not ours and we are not supposed to care because we have such a campus blessed with many tress and without traffic. But then think about it, Ubelt gives us somehow a picture of our educational system and the graduates that we are producing. We have to care and be a solution. For me, the significance of sociological imagination is to think that we can be the solution, that we can make a difference.
